Golf Courses in Scotland with Hotels

The Old Course Hotel, St Andrews

For any groups considering travelling to The Home of Golf for those much promised Scottish golf tours, recent investment news from some key hotel & hospitality operators provides a much needed boost.

Accommodation options already existed across the full range of standards and budgets but for many golf travellers there is an added appeal if some of the planned courses have a top rated hotel on site or in very close proximity, drastically reducing travel times and, given Scotland’s long summer days, perhaps an opportunity to enjoy some after dinner golf.

The Kingdom of Fife Golf Courses & Hotels

St Andrews has been welcoming golfers from around the world for as long as the game has been played. For sheer location, location, location The Old Course Hotel positioned on the edge of the infamous 17th Road Hole or the recently extended and fully refurbished Rusacks Hotel overlooking the 18th & 1st fairways of the most hallowed turf in the world of golf have to be your choice.
Barely a couple of miles outside town and offering stunning cliff top views Fairmont St Andrews currently boasts two courses of its own with future plans to completely revamp the layout as one championship standard course. All of these first class hotels are ideally located for playing Fife’s other fine golf courses including Kingsbarns, Crail, Elie, Lundin Links and the newest of them all Dumbarnie Links.

Ayrshire Golf Courses & Hotels

Travel south west to Scotland’s Ayrshire coast and a fine collection of links golf courses awaits youOut of favour with The R&A Open Championship committee due to its current ownership, Turnberry remains a majestic golf venue with The Ailsa Open Championship course now ably supported by the vastly improved King Robert The Bruce second course. You have the option of staying in the main hotel or one of the luxury lodges set between the hotel and the excellent clubhouse.

The quality of golf across Ayrshire has never been in doubt with Prestwick, Gailes Links, Western Gailes, Barassie, Royal Troon, Dundonald, West Kilbride and a few more on  “ must play “ lists and now the accommodation options have taken a major step forward.
Overlooking Royal Troon since 1894, the recent purchase and complete renovation of The Marine Hotel Troon by its new operators Marine & Lawn has restored  this fine hotel to its former glory.

At Dundonald Links, visiting golfers can now enjoy the challenge of a vastly improved course, relax in the newly completed state of the art clubhouse and then enjoy the convenience of staying with their group in one of the excellent on-site lodges.

The Marine & Lawn brand is certainly having an impact on the Scottish Golf Travel market. Having worked their magic on Rusacks, Marine Troon and Marine North Berwick which overlooks The West Links, summer 2023 will see the much anticipated re-opening of Dornoch Station Hotel, the latest addition to their stable of bespoke properties in the world’s best golf locations. Dornoch is admittedly well served at present for first class hotels with both The Royal  Golf Hotel and Links House located almost on the first tee of the mighty Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
As a golf destination The Highlands of Scotland is benefitting from a genuine resurgence with the well established courses at Dornoch, Brora, Golspie, Tain, Fortrose, Carnegie & Castle Stuart ( now rebranded as Cabot Highlands ) due to be joined by a second course at Cabot Highlands and the Coul Links development near Dornoch is currently going through the planning process.

Cabot Highlands does offer a limited number of on-site lodging for smaller groups and further east along the Moray Firth, anyone planning to play Nairn and Nairn Dunbar will be well looked after at The Golf View Hotel & Spa

The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire easily ranks as one of the finest golf venues anywhere. Genuine five star luxury since its opening in 1924 by The Caledonia Railway, its three superb courses The King’s, The Queen’s and The PGA will test and delight golfers of all abilities. If you can drag yourself away from such splendour for a few hours, the neighbours at Auchterarder Golf Club will be delighted to welcome you to their own piece of Perthshire golf heaven.

The fearsome Championship Course at Carnoustie is well renowned and a favourite choice for many Scottish golf tours. When you combine it with the other two courses, a brilliant clubhouse and the Carnoustie Golf Hotel which sits behind the 18th green on the main course, the venue offers a top grade facility for visiting golf groups.Recently it was announced that Carnoustie Golf Links has taken ownership of the hotel. Prior to you and your fellow golfers taking on golf’s greatest challenge ( The Championship Links ) we would recommend a visit to nearby Monifieth Links and Panmure to sharpen up your game.

East Lothian Golf Courses & Hotels…Scotland’s Golf Coast

I briefly mentioned North Berwick earlier and its popularity grows every season as does the East Lothian area in general, packed with classic links courses and fine hospitality options.
For on-site accommodation Archerfield offers two courses Fidra and Dirleton with a range of lodges, cottages and the main Archerfield House.
Craigielaw allows travelling golfers to enjoy playing its fine links course, take advantage of the excellent practice facilities then stay and relax in the lodge including its bar and restaurant.

For old world elegance, Greywalls Hotel, sited adjacent to the clubhouse of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has been welcoming visitors since its conversion into a hotel in 1948.

We would strongly recommend Duck’s Inn at Aberlady. Owned by golf obsessive and former Royal Marine Malcolm Duck, this charming Inn dating from 1638 is recognised as one of East Lothian’s leading hotels with gracious hospitality, distinctive atmosphere and food beyond compare. With so many great golf courses such as Muirfield, Gullane, Kilspindie, Luffness New and Renaissance concentrated in a relatively small area golfers can base themselves in any of the nearby hotels or self catering apartments and comfortably work their way round many of the twenty two golf courses on “ Scotland’s Golf Coast “

Aberdeenshire Golf Courses & Hotels

An area of Scotland blessed with some world class links golf courses including Royal Aberdeen, Murcar, Trump International and Cruden Bay. The majority of golfers will stay in the city of Aberdeen with The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa and The Chester Hotel always ranking high.

Meldrum House Country Hotel, set approx 20 miles inland from Aberdeen sits in 240 acres including its own golf course and teaching academy.

Overlooking Cruden Bay Golf Club, The Dunes is a luxury 5 bedroom house owned and operated by well known golf fanatic and key influencer in the Scottish golf tourism industry Ru Macdonald. The property is ideally located for smaller groups looking to play a number of the great courses in this part of Scotland.

Argyll & Islay Golf Courses & Hotels

For many of today’s Scottish golf travellers the opportunity to test their links golf skills on the challenging layouts at Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes, Dunaverty and over on Scotland’s whisky island Islay at The Machrie Links is proving too much of a temptation.Fortunately the accommodation available fully complements these great courses.

Virtually on the infamous opening hole at Machrihanish Golf Club, The Ugadale Hotel and cottages will allow you and your group to unwind after a testing round, enjoying some fine Kintyre hospitality.
