Cabot Highlands,Inverness

Like so many passionate Scottish golfers, I loved Castle Stuart links when it opened in 2009 looked on with pride as it hosted a number of Scottish Opens and am now very excited by the ambitious plans being implemented by the new owners Cabot including the scheduled soft opening late in 2025 of the much anticipated second golf course Old Petty; designed by renowned golf architect Tom Doak.

With a number of international golf groups heading north with us this season, it would have been rude not to pop up the A9 for some early links golf and a “nosey“ at the on-going course construction. Of course what that means in reality is a very early start from Glasgow followed by a 177 mile drive; remembering to turn right at Inverness and stay alert for the never ending collection of average speed cameras. The enforced relaxed progress at least allows the opportunity to savour both the glorious scenery and the evocative signs for so many fine Scottish golf courses. Just south of Perth you have the majestic Gleneagles Hotel and its 3 superb golf courses, just north for Blairgowrie and Pitlochry then on to Kingussie, Boat of Garten and Inverness itself.

From Inverness it is only a few miles along the A96 before you see the very modest signs for Castle Stuart Golf Links, providing little indication of the superb modern links layout and first class facilities awaiting all visiting golfers. Dominating the complex is the stunning Art Deco styled clubhouse which includes first class locker rooms, a bar, restaurant and a top floor lounge affording wonderful views over the large putting green, golf course and out over the Moray Firth as well as a fully stocked Pro Shop offering the latest offerings from many leading golf brands.

I was impressed with the quality of the clubhouse facilities after my early morning trip. I was equally impressed by the standard of customer service from all the staff. Highly professional, friendly and efficient. Exactly what you would expect from one of our premium golf venues combined with traditional Highland hospitality.

The layout of Castle Stuart works really well for visiting groups as the halfway house is located adjacent to the Starter office; creating a good atmosphere as golfers heading to the 10th tee mix with those preparing to start their round.
Fortunately for myself, this situation resulted in me being approached in true golf tradition to join up with a group of friends on their annual Spring mini golf tour involving Castle Stuart, Royal Dornoch and Nairn. Four hours (incl. coffee/whisky stop) of great company and some fairly decent golf by everyone made for an excellent day on one of Scotland’s finest golf courses.
